400-year-old Heidelberg Catechism:

Question 27: What do you
mean by the providence of God?

Answer: The almighty and everywhere
present power of God; whereby, as it were by his hand, he upholds
and governs heaven, earth, and all crea-tures; so that herbs and
grass, rain and drought, fruitful and barren years, meat and drink,
health and sickness, riches and poverty, yea, and all things come,
not by chance, but by his fatherly hand.

Question 28: What
advantage is it to us to know that God has created, and by his
providence does still up-hold all things?

Answer: That we may be
patient in adversity; thankful in prosperity; and that in all
things, which may hereafter befall us, we place our firm trust in
our faithful God and Father, that nothing shall separate us from
his love; since all creatures are so in his hand, that without his
will they cannot so much as move.

I came across this video from Ragamuffin Soul and it just reminded of what I have been learning in the study of Job in small group. Job was a man who we are told of righteous and blameless. God allowed Satan to bring suffering to His life, yet Job did not curse God but he continued to demand and explaination of why he is experiencing the suffering he was going through. We learnt that as well his friends were sure that Job’s suffering was as a result of unconfessed sin. But in the end we learnt that God does not give an explaination of why Job was suffering, except God responded in a series of questions of His creation – how greate and awesome God – that He is in control. In the end Job repented of not handling his suffering in the right way. He repended of hiding God’s counsel and demanding and explanation from God as if God owed him one. The key here is about to know the God who knows why things happen. We ourselves do not need to know the reason to every unknown. It is only sufficient to continue to build a relationship with God. To know God’s character, who He is and isn’t.

We have been going through a sermon series on Spiritual Warfare at church looking at Ephesians 6. There are three things to note:

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood.

There is an adversary.

The authority we have in Christ.

There are six things which Paul has listed to what we should use when we go into battle. These individual pieces of armour was what was common in the days back then where Roman soldiers were common. The items are what is made

Belt of truth

Breastplate of righteousness

Sandals of peace

Shield of faith

Helmet of salvation

Sword of the Spirit.

The first three were covered today with the last three covered next week. We were looking at what does this mean for us in todays age and time. For each of the first three, there are affirmations that we use:

Belth of Truth: I acknowledge what God says is true and I choose to live by it regardless of how I feel.

Breatplate of Righteousness: I am a child of God, righteous in Jesus Christ and I choose to do what is right.

Sandals of Peace: I am confident and secure in Jesus Christ and His promises I know I am forgiven and that God is for me.
